Sugarcane’s Caribbean indie conjures up the Rio beachfront but never leaves the Birmingham winter. Their debut EP contains four assured and alluring pop songs, which mix warm tones with chilly sentiments.

As the former bassist of Mr. Hudson and the Library, Robin French toured with Amy Winehouse, The Police and Kanye West. His new band Sugarcane’s hybrid sound updates vintage bossa nova & calypso for twenty-first century Britain.

With one British parent and one from the Caribbean, it's not surprising Robin's music is a post-Colonial jumble. Acoustic backyard sambas meet French chansons. Bahian drumming melds with West Indian steel pan, an old drum machine, and a toy melodica.
