Sugarcane's magpie sound fuses distinctly British indie songwriting with Brazilian rhythms. Robin French is the former bassist of Mr. Hudson & the Library, who played Jools Holland and supported Amy Winehouse, The Police and Kanye West.
His new band Sugarcane’s combination of bookish indie and blissed-out samba grooves has won them plays from Lauren Laverne, Cerys Mathews, Huw Edwards and Tom Robinson on 6Music, live spots at Ronnie Scotts and The Great Escape Festival, and glowing reviews for their debut album “Cat’s Eyes”.
Their bold new cover version of Billie Eilish’s modern classic “Billie Bossa Nova” takes the song for a dance in Sugarcane’s uniquely mellow sound universe, with Brazilian percussion, Trinidadian steel pan, and an unapologetic English accent. It’s the perfect soundtrack to the summer.
